Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed playing various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
